Lulu is not used to living in a loving home: with a guardian who uses her as a mistress and a father who only visits her when he needs money, it is certainly not a good foundation for her life. Lulu is completely isolated from the outside world and seems to have become accustomed to being sexually abused. But she has also learned that she can get things done by offering her body to her guardian.

Like Alban Berg's Lulu, librettist Jonathan Levi adapted two of Wedekind's most groundbreaking plays, Spring Awakening and Pandora's Box, into an opera.
When Spring Awakening and Pandora's Box premiered in Leipzig in 1898, Wedekind was vilified and persecuted for advocating unfeigned sexual pleasure and turning his heroine into a heartless whore.

Opera Spanga, in collaboration with Fontys Academy of the Arts, Tilburg, will produce the opera Lulu on Friday, January 17, and Saturday, January 18, at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
