Der Rosenkavalier

Misogyny versus a liberal view into the female soul

This incredibly exciting, revolutionary musical comedy by Richard Strauss contains a multitude of themes that have made the work both loved and reviled since its premiere in Dresden in 1911.

At a time when women were attempting to assume an increasingly prominent role in society and one of Freud's theories was circulating that sexuality is the cause of a disturbed psyche, three cosmopolitan men - Richard Strauss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Harry Graf Kessler - created Der Rosenkavalier for three tormented sopranos and an oversexed baritone.
