Opera Spanga, in collaboration with Keunstwurk, will create the docu-opera "The Flying Dutchman" with students from the Maritime Academy in Harlingen in the spring of 2023 and 2024. Using Wagner's opera Der Fliegende Höllander as a starting point, the student sailors asked themselves the following questions: Why do we finally set sail? And why do we long for home?
For two weeks, Opera Spanga immerses the young students in all aspects of filmmaking; they receive lessons on maritime painting, creating light, making foley (film sound effects), operating sound equipment, scriptwriting, costume design, acting, and singing. Everything is linked to the sea; paintings by maritime painters such as William Turner and Hendrik Cornelisz. Vroom are viewed and discussed. The students will learn about maritime music and how something as tangible as the sea can be interpreted as music. Together with the supervisors of the Maritime Academy, they will have experiential discussions about life at sea. Filmed in the streets of their hometown of Harlingen.
